Purpose:
Our purpose is to study the book "How the Brain Learns Mathematics" by David Souza. At every grade level we, as teachers, find students struggling with learning and retaining Math concepts. The objective is to broaden our knowledge of how the brain learns mathematics and adopt/develop strategies to help students learn and retain mathematical concepts.
Plan:
Achieving our objective will allow us, as math teachers, to have a better understanding of why some students might struggle when learning math. Having this knowledge and insight, we will try to develop well-timed lesson plans. This will aid struggling students in learning and remembering the content. Well-timed lessons will also enhance students' process skills. This project aligns with the NYS mathematics, science, and techonology standard 3. During this project we will create and maintain a blog that collegues can view.
Result:
The intended result ofthe group's work is to gain a better understanding of how the brain learns mathematics so we can plan lessons that will engage our students and help them retain more infornmation. Our students will be able to use the strategies in our findings to be more successful on parallel tasks, assesments, and bench marks.
We will be able to evaluate the impact of this project on the educational process by the lessons we revise to incorporate this research.
Our next meeting will be December 9, 2008.
